CoverButtons by Maxant
Well, not us exactly, but Maxant has. The original two-part aluminum coverbuttons were patented in 1960 and manufactured in Chicago. They were called then “Miracle Buttons -- Buttons to Cover”, and were made on the same machines and with the same dies that we now have in our Florida factory.
The company was sold in the 1980s and relocated to Georgia. The Reed family bought it out of bankruptcy in 2016 and moved it to south-central Florida. And all those awesome old cast-iron machines came with us!
We make 7 different button sizes, each with two styles of backs (wire eye for sewing and flat backs for crafting).
#20 – ½” – 13mm
#24 – ⅝” – 16mm
#30 – ¾” – 19mm
#36 – ⅞” – 22mm
#45 – 1 ⅛” – 28mm
#60 – 1 ½” – 38mm
#75 – 1 ⅞” – 47mm

Maxant Metals owner David Reed is an entrepreneur at heart. When he discovered in 2016 that the 50-year-old company that made the buttons his mom sewed with was headed into bankruptcy, he rescued it. He spent about a year commuting to Georgia from our home in South Florida to learn all he could about the aluminum button business, and finally decided to move the machines and manufacturing to Moore Haven.
Once moved in, he looked around and realized we had more room than we needed for the 7 buttons and 13 buckles we make. So he found another business for sale using similar processes and materials, Mike’s Aluminum in Orlando. We purchased that in 2018 and relocated it to Moore Haven, too.
Never one to sit on his laurels, David continued to find ways for Maxant to grow. We purchased a Louisiana company that made ATV guard plates in 2020, using the same material (aluminum) but on a CNC punch machine. Then he found some unwanted yet vintage machines that make those classic Florida clamshell awnings.
And most recently, we invested in brand new machines to make metal roofing panels.
